About Speedly โ Daily Typing Speed Test
Speedly is Wordlio's daily typing challenge. Every day a new passage is released โ 60 seconds, same text for every player, tracked on a shared leaderboard. Your score is your WPM (words per minute) adjusted for accuracy: errors reduce your effective total, so speed alone isn't enough. Compete to claim the top spot in your country or on the global board.
WPM is calculated as total characters correctly typed, divided by five (the standard word length), divided by the elapsed minutes. This international standard has been used since typewriter competitions in the 1880s to create a fair comparison regardless of word length variation. The average adult types between 38 and 40 WPM. Touch typists โ those who type without looking at the keyboard โ average 50โ80 WPM, with trained professionals often exceeding 100 WPM.
WPM Benchmarks
- Under 30 WPM โ Hunt-and-peck; learning touch typing will rapidly improve this
- 30โ50 WPM โ Average for most adults; functional but improvable
- 50โ70 WPM โ Above average; most office professionals type here
- 70โ100 WPM โ Fast; you're outpacing the majority of computer users
- 100+ WPM โ Expert; the level of trained typists and fast writers
Frequently Asked Questions
How is WPM calculated?
WPM = (correctly typed characters รท 5) รท elapsed minutes. Only correct characters count โ errors are penalised. This is the international standard for typing speed measurement.
Is today's passage the same for everyone?
Yes โ the daily passage is date-seeded and identical for every Speedly player worldwide. This makes the leaderboard a genuine daily competition where you're all measured on the same text.
How can I improve my WPM?
The single biggest improvement comes from learning touch typing โ keeping your eyes on the screen, not the keyboard. From there, slow deliberate practice at high accuracy builds the muscle memory that translates to speed. Daily Speedly sessions provide the consistency needed to see real improvement.
